The Problem

Overlapping barriers steal childhood, education, safety, and choice.

Adolescent girls in marginalised communities, especially teenage mothers and at-risk girls, face overlapping barriers that steal childhood, education, safety, and choice. Globally, about 21 million girls aged 15–19 become pregnant each year in low- and middle-income countries, with around 12 million births. Many are then pushed out of school, into poverty, unpaid care, stigma, isolation, and harmful practices, leaving them without the support to rebuild dignified futures.

Ending Harmful Practices

Every year, 12 million girls are married off before adulthood.

That is 23 girls every minute, about 10 girls in the time it takes you to read this. No region is currently on track to meet the 2030 target to end child marriage, and progress must move 20 times faster if we are going to end it.

Her Voice Foundation continues to work with partners to challenge child marriage, money marriage, and other harmful practices.

Stories of Change

Mary was married off at the age of 7.

Money marriage is a harmful cultural practice where girls are married off in exchange for family debts. With support from our partners, Her Voice Foundation has been working with survivors like Mary, who was married off at the age of 7, to confront the realities of this practice and rebuild their lives with dignity. So far, our work has supported over 1,000 survivors of money marriage and mobilised 1,000+ community leaders, men, and boys as allies in ending child marriage, challenging harmful practices, and supporting girls’ education. These stories remind us that change is possible when survivors are supported, communities are engaged, and girls are given the chance to reclaim their futures.

Her Voice Foundation’s Second Chance Education Pathways are designed for teenage mothers and at-risk girls whose lives have been interrupted by poverty, motherhood, childcare responsibilities, school exclusion, harmful cultural practices, gender-based violence, disability, stigma, crisis, and deeply rooted social norms. We understand that transformational change requires more than offering a girl a classroom, a training space, or a skill. A girl cannot fully participate in education if she has no childcare, no transport, no family support, no confidence, no income, no safe space, or no one helping her believe that her future still matters. That is why our Second Chance Education model is holistic. We combine flexible learning, practical support, livelihood skills, health and rights education, mentorship, community engagement, digital access, and policy advocacy to help girls choose the pathway that fits their lives and the futures they dream of. Our work is not about asking girls to fit into systems that have already failed them. It is about building pathways around their realities so they can learn, earn, heal, lead, and live with dignity.
